Why pre-school education is important even within hospital walls
13.02.2024
In 2023, more than 2,000 preschoolers attended classes at the School
of Superheroes
In 2023, on the initiative of the state institution Superheroes School, the legislation was changed to
allow the
provision of educational services to the youngest patients in hospitals. As a result, in 2023 alone,
more than two
thousand preschoolers attended classes at the Superheroes School's educational centres.
"With the adoption of the changes, we had the opportunity to expand the age group of children and work
with
preschoolers, hire teachers and their assistants. We studied and tested programmes for the development
and education of
pre-school children and set up a pedagogical and methodological council. Today we have 11 teachers and 8
assistants,'
says Yevheniia Smirnova, founder of the Superheroes School and Deputy Minister of Education and Science.

Education in hospitals promotes a zest for life.
For a child, it is part of learning about the world and understanding that life goes on.
Supporting parents in difficult moments:
hospital education helps parents to take time, accept and understand the diagnosis of a seriously ill
child, and gives
them the tools to cope with emotional challenges.
Improving psychological well-being:
Focusing on the psychological well-being of students and their parents helps them overcome traumatic
situations and
restore mental health. With the full-scale invasion, psychological support for children of all ages has
become an
integral part of the educational process, especially when it comes to hospital education. There are
currently 10
psychologists working with students at the Superheroes School.
Creating an optimal environment for the development and education of
children:
The preschoolers are taught according to a special programme that takes into account the age and current
needs of
preschoolers. Teachers and assistants with specialist training and experience in working with the
youngest learners work
with the youngest learners. This means that the learning and development process is more precise and of
higher quality.
Last year, the number of students totalled more than 10,000 and more than 20% of them were pre-school
children, which
proves the importance of this area. Since the start of the full-scale invasion, another special area has
been developed
- psychological assistance. They work with the psychological state of the students and their parents, as
well as the
teaching staff. At present, the Superheroes School is home to children who have suffered from the war:
from shelling,
gunshot wounds and burns. Our psychologists and educators do a tremendous job in helping these children
to reopen to the
world. The work of the staff is therefore extremely difficult and multidisciplinary.
